About

I am a dot in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Professional bio:
Kanchan is an artist based in Kathmandu. She works primarily with text in her artistic practice. Her explorations of the medium manifest in various forms from poetry readings and temporary installations to comic strips and blog posts about the everyday. Her works and writings are heavily influenced by her experiences of living and working in Kathmandu and are therefore, often autobiographical. Her MFA thesis was a three-part poetry reading that was grounded in a single question that was frequently asked to her as a child ‘Ani timro buwale k garnu huncha?’ or ‘And what does your father do?’ The work attempted to navigate and reveal the political nature of this question in the context of her personal background of being raised by a divorced mother in a society steeped in patriarchal values. Besides pursuing her artistic practice, Kanchan works as an illustrator for multimedia design studio Sixwasnine Design and is a designer for the Kathmandu-based clothing company 108 Wears. She is also a member of Virangana Comics Anthology.

Master’s thesis:
Burathoki, Kanchan. Kanchan. Gothenburg: Valand Academy, University of Gothenburg, 2015.
Monograph of my artwork published in relation to the exam course of the MFA: Fine Art Programme at Valand Academy, 2015

  1. I have been reading your art news in myrepublica.com and I thoroughly enjoy your write ups. By profession I am a software engineer. As a pet project I have been working on website to promote Nepali arts and personnel related to art field like artists and writers since 2007. The site has grown up slowly and now is in solid shape.

One of the main aim of artsofnepal.com is to produce more art writers and critics which you know is null in the context of Nepali art scenario. At present, there are very few writer like you and Ujjwala Maharjan who write frequently in this field. We would like to discuss with you how we can work with art writers to promote Nepali artworks, artists and writers as well. How artsofnepal.com can act as a common platform to produce more art writers? We know content is the king in the web(Internet) and promotion of art is not possible without art writers like you. We request you to get involved in this project and provide us your invaluable suggestion and make this project a success.

You can write back to us at craftyhand@gmail.com

You can visit our site at http://www.artsofnepal.com . I have included few of your write ups that appeared in myrepublica.com without your permission. Sorry for violating copy rights.

    1. hello krantikarki bhai…nice to find another fellow nepali blogger. :-) but i believe that there is no such thing as a ‘qualified’ blogger. good luck for your SLC results. come to think of it, it’s been 10 years since i took that test. i was at biratnagar last year, twice. i went to dharan once and the next time i went up to dhankuta. next time, i’d like to go beyond. :-) i’ve heard of basantapur and hile.

      1. Thank you so much for adding my blog in your blogroll, I also added your blog in mine. I am really appreciative of your support. I aim to add short fiction in my blog. Writing short stories really takes time, but hopefully I’ll have one out in a few days. I hope you will continue giving me your precious support as I am having pretty low traffic and the blog is still in its infancy:)

  6. Hi,
I came across your blog on a random google search for janai khatera, and I like what I’ve been reading. I have a small writing project, and was wondering if you would like to take it up. I should have been doing it myself, but not time. I read you were lazy, but I think I’m lazier. This is me, if you want to take a look http://chaddke.blogspot.com/

    1. hi Santosh! Thanks for stopping by and for reading. :-) hahaha…i am lazy sometimes. but not all the time. :-P What is your small writing project? I read your film reviews and watched that video! How Funny. LOL

  7. Hi kgb,
Thanks for writing back so promptly. I was going through more of your blog, looks like you’ve written quite a bit, so I guess not all lazy after all ;)
So, we have recently opened up a travel company. We thought long and hard, and named it Fantastic Nepal Holidays. That’s because we think Nepal is fantastic, and want to show it to people the fantastic way. The writing project is just writing about Nepal – not the boring itinerary like Poon Hill is at 3400 m, or the pretentious Nepal is the land of Buddha and highest mountain in the world – but fun stuff about Nepal. Just stuff that reflects the typical, quintessential aspects of Nepal or being Nepalese. Something in the lines of Dal Bhat Power, 24 Hours. Have you read “Escape from Kathmandu” by Kim Stanley Robinson? That’s the tone I’m trying to hit, but like I said, I like your tone too.
I hope you understand what I’m trying to get at. I’ll promise you this though – make Nepal look good, make Nepal sound fun, let your love for Nepal shine through in your writing, and you MUST enjoy writing the pieces, and I’ll let you have final say in the published content. Our editors may tweak a few keywords, but we’ll never force you to insert SEO friendly text at the cost of the feel of the piece.
Makes sense? Let me know if it piques your interest, and we can talk in more detail.
    Cheers,
    Santosh
